Which ISO standard does your company need?

Publisher: ConsultHQ

The true standard is not chosen by the popularity of the name. Start with the business, product, customer requirements, environmental impact and obligations you already have. This way, you will avoid a system that looks good in the offer, but does not solve the real problem of the company.

When is ISO 9001 a logical first step?

ISO 9001 is a framework for a quality management system. It is especially useful when a company wants a more consistent service or product, clearer responsibilities, complaint control and measurable processes. It is applicable to different sectors and sizes of organizations. The current edition is ISO 9001:2026.

ISO 9001 can be a good start for a factory with scrap and uneven supplier control, as well as for a service company that depends on the reliable implementation of agreed work. Certification is a separate decision, according to market requirements and business goals.

When is ISO 14001 relevant?

ISO 14001 governs the environmental management system. It makes sense when waste, energy, water, emissions, resources, incidents or expectations of value chain partners are important. The ISO 14001:2026 edition emphasizes that the importance of environmental issues is assessed according to the actual context of the organization.

A company can link ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 into an integrated system, with common processes for training, internal audits and corrective actions. This does not mean that every company automatically needs both standards.

Where do HACCP and GDP fit in?

The HACCP system is an approach to food safety control and represents a regulatory obligation for many subjects in the food business. GDP refers to good distribution practice for medicines and a special regulatory framework for distribution. These systems have a different role than voluntary ISO certification. Therefore, the restaurant should not replace the HACCP plan with an ISO certificate; wholesalers cannot replace GDP requirements with a general quality system.

How to make a decision without unnecessary expense?

Create a short process and risk map, review customer commitments and inquiries, then do gap analysis system that has the highest value. Clearly separate the regulatory minimum, the business goal and the eventual certification goal. Only then determine the scope of documentation, training and internal checks.
