ISO 9001:2026 – what the new standard brings
Publisher: ConsultHQ
ISO 9001:2026 is the current edition of the international standard for the quality management system. It was published on September 16, 2026. More important to the company than the number of releases is whether its processes consistently meet customer requirements and provide data for improvement.
What did ISO specifically emphasize in the 2026 edition?
The new edition retains the familiar framework of the quality management system, with clearer wording and easier connection with other ISO systems. ISO particularly emphasizes leadership, a quality culture and a clearer distinction between risks and opportunities. This does not mean that every company must write a new set of procedures: first, the text of the standard should be compared with the way the team actually works.
Quality culture is seen in decisions, not in slogans. Do employees report errors in a timely manner? Does the management respond to recurring complaints? Are the goals linked to the results the customer notices? Questions like these show where the system has real value.
What remains the basis of a good system?
The organization still needs to understand customer needs, describe processes and responsibilities, manage change, monitor performance and improve operations based on findings. In production, this can mean supplier control, measurements and complaints; consistent implementation, communication and resolution of deviations in services.
Documentation should support those processes. If the records exist only before the audit, the problem is not the lack of a form, but a weak way of applying it.
How to approach the transition from ISO 9001:2015?
Start by reviewing the processes, existing evidence, objectives and findings of internal audits. Then do gap analysis by Release 2026, prioritize and change owners. Train the people who are really affected by the changes, check the implementation with an internal audit and close the identified deviations.
For certified organizations, the transition schedule and verification method should be confirmed with their certification body. A consultant can prepare the system, while the certificate is issued by an independent body. Don't just change the "2015" mark in the documents: show how the changed requirements are reflected in the work.
When is it time for a specific assessment?
If you are just introducing a system, the new release is the starting point. If you already have a certificate, first determine what of your existing work is worth keeping. Explore our support for ISO 9001 implementation and internal audits.
